At Gause & Son Jewelers, we have an exceptional collection of
tradition round diamonds and we also offer a wide section of the
finest non-round or “fancy shapes” diamonds available.
Round
The
round brilliant cut is by far the most popular diamond available
today. For almost 100 years diamond cutters have been using mathematical
calculations and advanced theories on light behavior to maximize
the brilliance and fire of a round diamond. One such diamond brand
that achieves a 98% return of the light to your eye is the Hearts
on Fire diamond. This particular brand is known as “the worlds
most perfectly cut diamond”. Only 2% of all diamonds cut meet
their standards. They are available in our Downtown and Paddock
Mall locations.
Princess
This
is our most popular non-round diamond. The unique cut and dazzling
brilliance make this cut a favorite. The princess cut is traditionally
square in shape (although it can come in slightly rectangular shapes
also) with pointed corners. Think of a princess cut as a square
version of a round brilliant cut diamond. Because there is no “optimal”
shape for the princess cut, it is up to the buyer to decide if he
or she prefers a very square shape or a more rectangular one.
Oval
An
oval diamond has a gorgeous brilliance that is very similar to the
round diamond. Oval diamonds are very popular as their gentle oval
shape can help accentuate long, slender fingers. For most traditional
diamonds, the length to width ratio (L÷W) is approx. 1.30-1.70.
Emerald
A
classic emerald cut is a rectangular shape with cut corners. What
makes the emerald cut different is the type of faceting. The top
half of the diamond (the crown) is step-cut-very long, parallel
facets. The bottom half (pavilion) is cut with rectangular facets
to create a unique optical effect. Due to its larger, open table
the clarity of the diamond becomes more important because it is
easier to spot the inclusions in this cutting style. Emerald cut
diamonds can vary greatly in how rectangular they are. For a classic
emerald cut shape, look for a length to width ratio (L÷W)
of approx. 1.30-1.50.
Asscher
This
unique cut is a close cousin to the emerald cut. It was developed
by the cutter Albert Asscher. It is nearly identical to the emerald
cut, except that it is square. The pavilion of the diamond also
has rectangular facets in the same style as the emerald cut, but
with a twist. The angles and number of facets are unique to the
Asscher cut which give it a distinctive appearance and dazzle.
Marquise
The
shape of the brilliant cut marquise can help you maximize the carat
weight because the marquise shape can give you a much larger looking
diamond. The length of the marquise diamond helps make fingers look
long and slender. As with all fancy shapes, there is no “ideal”
marquise cut, just the ideal cut for your taste. Most traditional
marquise diamonds have a length to width ratio (L÷W) of approx.
1.75-2.25
Radiant
Think
of a radiant as a princess cut diamond with cut corners. The cut
corners help identify this diamond shape and help make it a popular
choice. Radiant cut diamonds can vary in their degree of rectangularity,
which makes choosing one easier since so many variations are available.
The shape of the radiant cut make it look beautiful with any shape
side-diamonds or as a solitaire.
Pear
The
pear shape is a brilliant cut diamond, also known as a “teardrop”
because of the single pointed end and the other round end. The unique
look of the pear shape helps keep it a popular choice for a engagement
rings as well as fashion jewelry. If you choose an elongated pear
shape, the length helps create a slimming effect on the finger.
A traditional pear shape will have a length to width ratio (L÷W)
of approx. 1.45 to 1.75
Heart
A
traditional symbol of love, the heart shaped diamond is a distinctive
choice for an engagement ring or piece of fine jewelry. The heart
shape diamond is brilliant cut; the traditional heart will have
a length to width ratio (L÷W) of approx. .90to1.10
Cushion
This
shape can trace back its ancestry over 100 years. They are also
known as “pillow” cut diamonds and have rounded edges
and rounded corners with larger facets that enhance its brilliance.
A cushion cut diamond can be square to rectangular in shape. It
is a wonderful alternative to the princess or radiant cut diamond
is you like a “softer” look. A traditional cushion shape
will have a length to width ratio (L÷W) of approx. 1.0 to
1.5 (a squarer shape)
